Self-tanning ingredients

When purchasing any body product, your first step should always be checking the ingredients listed on the bottle. The ingredients in your chosen products are crucial because whatever you apply to your skin gets absorbed into your body. This means that harmful ingredients can potentially damage your skin and introduce toxins into your bloodstream. Since the FDA doesn't regulate skincare products, it's essential for you to conduct your own research. That's why ensuring that every product I develop contains the best ingredients is paramount to me, making UKLOVE a brand you can rely on for thorough research.

UKLOVE's self-tanning products contain water, certified organic DHA, propylene glycol, glycerin, phenoxyethanol, coumarin, polysorbate 20, hydroxyethyl cellulose, cocamidopropyl betaine, aloe vera and citric acid, with Anti-aging benefits.  What sets my formula apart is its simplicity - it contains fewer ingredients than any other tanning product on the market.  This is beneficial because you don’t want to add unnecessary ingredients to your skin care products.

How to choose the right tanning product for you

When selecting a self-tanner gel, considering your natural skin tone is crucial. Opting for an "Ultra Dark" self-tanner when you have pale skin can result in an orange hue. Why does this happen? Well, the intensity levels—tan, light, medium, dark, and ultra-dark—are determined by the concentration of DHA, the main ingredient in any sunless tanning formula. Typically, light tanners gel contain 6% DHA, medium 8%, dark 10%, and ultra-dark 12%. However, some skin tones may not react well to a 12% DHA concentration, leading to an unnatural orange tan. Moreover, higher DHA levels increase the risk of application errors, potentially resulting in a botched sunless tan.

That's why tanning gel SPF15 comes in medium—it offers a safe DHA level suitable for all skin tones and ensures a flawless application regardless of your expertise level. What's great about this gel is that if you desire a darker tan, you can simply apply another coat the next day.

Even if you opt not to use tanning gel SPF15, choosing a medium shade is advisable. It provides the most natural-looking sunless tan, guaranteeing a flattering result regardless of your skin tone.

How to use tanning gel

Prepping your skin and selecting the right products beforehand can significantly impact the outcome of your sunless tan.

  1. Start by removing unwanted hair and showering with a natural or organic soap, followed by exfoliating at least a few hours before applying your self-tan product. This routine prevents clogged pores, maintains the correct skin pH level, and prevents wax from stripping your new sunless tan.
  2. Exfoliation is key as it removes dead skin, leaving a clean canvas for an even self-tan application. Use an exfoliating mitt along with organic or natural soap for best results. Avoid body scrubs or oily products, as they can leave a film on your skin, resulting in streaks.
  3. Switching to an organic or natural body wash, like Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Body Wash, helps preserve your skin's pH level, ensuring the best sunless tan.
  4. When choosing a self-tan gel, opt for medium instead of dark. DHA, the tanning ingredient, determines the intensity level. Starting with medium reduces the risk of a bad tan or orange hue. Apply lotion to dry areas first to ensure an even application.
  5. After allowing the self-tanning gel to set, rinse with warm water in the shower and do not use any soap or lotion for 24 hours. No matter what brand of tanning product you use, follow the instructions carefully to avoid turning orange.
  6. After 24 hours, use recommended organic or natural body washes and lotions daily to maintain skin pH and moisture levels for sunless tanning time.

Lastly here are some other tips I have for you:

  • Don't get into a jacuzzi with fake tanning gel on, as it will come off right away (swimming pools, oceans, lakes will do). This is because hot water, along with chlorine, will instantly remove the tanning gel.
  • Do not go in the sauna or take a long bath while having self tanner on, the excessive sweat from the sauna isn’t good for the fake tan as well as a bath.
  • Use your partner to apply self tanner to your back or purchase a Back Applicator, the back can be a hard to reach place but with help or a self tan back applicator it will be easy.
  • Put baby powder on the areas you sweat a lot BEFORE working out to stop it from rubbing off faster in certain areas, the baby powder will absorb the sweat which will stop the self tanner gel from coming off faster in those areas.
  • Do not use a loofah until you are ready for your sunless tan to come off, a loofah will exfoliate the fake tan off.
  • Pat dry with a towel when getting out of the shower to stop the rubbing from taking off your fake tan.
  • Do not use an exfoliating product on your face until you are ready for the self tanner to come off.
  • You can apply self-tanning gel after your spray tan to make it last longer, use it on the third day of your spray tan.
  • Do not use self tanner for the first time before a huge event, practicing once before will give you confidence before your big event.
  • If you are getting your nails done while using a tanning product, tell your technician not to use an exfoliating body scrub and to pat dry with a towel.

Self tanning doesn’t have to be a scary thing, with the right knowledge and practice you can have a flawless faux tan in the comfort of your own home every week. All of the tips and tricks I have shared will help you with your self tan application, how to make it last as long as possible and how to get the best brown color.
